If your hair is kinky, coily, or curly this is for you! After reading this you’ll know exactly how to keep you natural hair healthy during the winter!
When you think of winter time you might think of Christmas season, nippy weather, cute over the knee boots, or…dry hair. It’s no secrete that the winter time is not “Curly-hair” friendly. So, why is this exactly?
Usually, curly hair tangles pretty easily. So, the combination of the cold harsh air, the wind, and the cotton hats we wear equals zero moisture left in our hair and TANGLES! It’s the shock of all of this extreme weather that accelerates damage. This includes split ends, dryness, frizziness, breakage, the list is endless!
But there is still hope! With these tips you can not only prevent breakage but promote hair growth!! Here are 5 tips to keep your natural hair happy and healthy all winter.
1 Use Protective Styles!
There’s definitely a reason why the winter time is sometimes referred to as protective style season. The harsh winter air can dry out your hair and suck out all of it’s moisture. Protective styles help by allowing your hair to remain undisturbed for at least 30 days at a time. This will work wonders for maintaining your inches and keeping your hair healthy all winter!!
2 NEVER wear a cotton knitted hat on dry hair!
Cotton is the king pin when it comes to absorbing moisture, so why would you apply that directly on your hair? Not only does this severely dry out your hair, but knitted hats tangles and knots your hair like crazy! Do yourself a favor, keep a satin scarf on under your hair when wearing a cotton beanie. Or you can pick up a cute satin lined beanie as a replacement.

3 Trim your ends
I know it can be hard to say goodbye to that 1 inch of hair that you worked 2 long months to gain, but it’s essential! Getting rid of splitting ends will stop the damage where it stands and help you maintain healthy hair for a longer period of time.
4 Take your vitamins and drink water
Hair needs vitamins and nutrients to grow strong and healthy. Taking hair vitamins are the easiest way to do this for a lot of people. But a few key vitamins you can focus on are biotin, collagen, and vitamin E. Not only that, but water is essential for hydrated hair. Make sure you’re drinking lots of it!
5 DEEP CONDITION
Possibly the most important tip is to deep condition your hair biweekly. Deep condition penetrates you hair and gives it all of the nutrients and moisture it needs for the winter. Try to target deep conditioners that have natural ingredients or make your own! One of my favorite deep conditioning techniques is the Maya deep condition!
